National Closing the Gap Day is an important event on the annual calendar that allows the opportunity for both individuals, groups and organisations to show their support for Indigenous health equality. Centrecare hosted an afternoon tea at their Perth office this year to show support for, and to raise awareness of this important issue. Glenda Kickett, Centrecare’s Aboriginal Cultural Advisor, gave a presentation to staff on the Closing the Gap in Indigenous Disadvantage Framework that was established by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in 2008. The framework sets specific targets for closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in life expectancy, child mortality, education and employment. Glenda referred to the Closing the Gap report released by the Prime Minister at the resumption of parliament in 2014 in which the Prime Minister acknowledged that while progress has been made with some objectives, there is still much work to be done. A big thank you to Oxfam who sponsor National Closing the Gap Day for the short video that we had to show staff on the day, and also to Glenda for sharing her time with staff to highlight the importance of this issue.
